Overview

A vertebral compression fracture happens when a weakened vertebra collapses under ordinary load — typically from osteoporosis or minor trauma. The result is often sudden, severe back pain and a measurable loss of height.

Balloon kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that restores vertebral height and stabilizes the fracture with bone cement. Many patients experience dramatic pain relief within hours to days and regain mobility quickly.

Common Symptoms

  • Sudden, sharp mid- or low-back pain
  • Pain worse with standing and walking
  • Loss of height or kyphotic posture
  • Tenderness directly over the spine

Common Causes

  • Osteoporosis (most common)
  • Spinal trauma
  • Cancer-related bone weakness
  • Long-term corticosteroid use
